ROUND 4- THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS

ROUND 4 OF THE INAUGURAL WOMEN'S GRAND PRIX kicked off on Saturday with small pockets of riders congregating around the course, discussing the final round tactics that may change the face of the leader board. Riders were looking for that edge; that slight piece of brilliance that would give them an advantage over the other teams as the final round played out.

SKCC/Giant (SKG) entered the round with a strong lead over second place Total Rush (RSH) and Hawthorn CC GOLD (HGD), but the final order of the podium was yet to be seen.

National Blvd had dried out beautifully as the sun broke through the clouds, and the riders started belting their way around the 1.8km circuit.

ROUND 1

THE MELTON COURSE WAS A BIT OF AN UNKNOWN FOR ALL RIDERS, and it was always going to make this a tough way to start the series.

A blowy, but warm start to the summer saw Nicole Whitburn (LIV) take the prologue by two seconds from Liz Hall (HGD) and Tanya Matthewson (RSH).

The division 2 race was won by Shantelle Maurer (BCS) following a crash that claimed Catherine McInerney (SMC) on the banked final corner. Hannah Bush (HYP) and Teagan Westerndorff (HGD) rounded out the podium.

Division 1 also had an incident on the same corner that put an end of Jodie Batchelor's (CIF/SKG) short term plans with a broken rib.

Nicole Whitburn claimed the win and the first CycleCover Leader's Jersey with the win and the intermediate sprint, from Kate Finegan (BCS) and Madeleine Pape (SKG).
SKCC/Giant went away from round 1 with the lead in the teams category.

ROUND 2

THE DAY KICKED OFF UNDER CLEAR SKIES and it turned out to be a cracking summer's day.  Riders took shelter wherever they could between races to keep out of the heat.

Liz Hall came away with a super fast prologue win over the longest course of the series by 2" from Jo Hogan (RSH) and Katherine O'Shea (TBS) a further second back.

The Division 2 race ended in a bunch sprint to Emma Pane (BWK) from Shantelle Maurer (BCS) While Teagan Westendorff took her second podium place in division 2 for the series.

Division 1 was shortened by ten minutes as the temperature neared 38 degrees in the sun.  A split in the bunch soon formed with however Hawthorn CC GOLD and SKCC/Giant didn't have anyone in the break that got more than 2 minutes up the road.

Nicole Whitburn was shed from the break in the final laps that saw Kate Finegen (BCS) take the win from Jo Hogan  and Katherine O'Shea third.

Torq/Bicycle Superstore took the win for the day, with no change at the top of the leadboard. Nicole Whitburn retained the leader's jersey by just 2 points.

ROUND 3

THE SERIES TRAVELLED TO BENDIGO on the closed Mayfair park circuit that saw kangaroos making good use of the facilities prior to the start.

With the top 2 in the competition in Nicole Whitburn and Kate Finegan missing for this round, Carly Williams took advantage of their absence and leapfrogged her way into the leader's jersey.

The prologue was take by Meg Marsh (HGD) by 2 seconds from Clare Dallat (TBS) and team mate Liz Hall.

The division 2 race took its toll with five riders failing to make it to the finish. Kerrie Baumgartner (BWK) claimed the win from Shantelle Maurer (BCS) and Joanna Wall (TBS).

In division 1, five riders got a break from the field, where Chloe McIntosh (TBS) took the downhill finish from local Cait Fraser (BCS) and Amy Bradley (RSH).

Amy Bradley moved into 2nd place just 6 points behind her team mate. In their absence, Whitburn and Finegan dropped to 3rd and 4th respectively.

SKCC/Giant claimed the teams aggregate for Round 3 and stretched themselves to a near unbeatable advantage.
